Thanks to the efforts of Vince Hounsome and Julian Day, Stourhead Woods saw the resurrection of GDW mountain bike racing on Sunday.  As can be seen in Mike Smith’s video footage, the course threw a mix of challenges at the thirteen riders who took part.  Regular mtb rider Nigel Brown dominated the race from start to finish, lapping all but the first four finishers.  Nigel completed six laps in the one hour race, his lap times of between 10 and 10 and a half minutes meant that he was a round a minute per lap faster than second-placed Vince Hounsome.  Nigel had plenty of time in hand to cope with a last lap puncture and subsequent run to the finish line.  Vince’s race was hampered by his bike’s chain regularly getting trapped between the rear wheel and it’s sprockets.  Third place went to Tom Brown with Ben Day in fourth.
There were some new faces to Gillingham Wheelers events, the standout performance amongst them coming from 13 year-old Lawrence Pitman who won the Youth section by finishing in sixth place overall.  Matt Davis (aged 10) finished as second placed Youth rider.  Raleigh Avanti rider Charles Rees really didn’t enjoy the switch from Tarmac to mud, just edging out Rosie Brown after a race-long duel for 9th.  His mountain bike is now for sale!
