The Frome and District Wheelers held their traditional curtain-raising 10 mile time trial today with the weather surprisingly mild and calm given the winter we’ve had thus far.  Many riders recorded some very encouraging times which bodes well for the season ahead.  The stand-out Gillingham Wheelers performances came from Charles Rees and Nigel Brown.  Charles has started the year where he left off from in 2009 and flew round the course in 22 minutes 57 seconds for sixth place overall, the first time he has finished in the top 10 in an Open event.  Nigel’s strong form from last week’s Andover 10 and in recent mountain bike races continued and completed the course in 24.20.
Other GDW riders were closely matched, Simon Rouse came home without leaving the road this week in 26.35, Steve Way (riding as always on his fixed-gear bike for Ratae RC) in 26.55, Grahame Reed 27.13, Richard Hansford 27.44 and Don Tanner with 27.52.  John Phillips just got home in under the half-hour with 29.55 and Sarah Roberts just missed out on the fastest lady prize with 34.06.  The overall winner was Aran Stanton (VC St Raphael) who finished with a time of 21.43.
