Club History

Gillingham & District Wheelers was founded in 1993 and so the Club is 25 years old this year (2018)! Since the early days when the club was just a handful of enthusiast, membership has grown so we now have over 90 members of all ages and abilities.

In the intervening years, members have taken part in major sportives and Grand Fondos across Europe including Prudential Ride London, Velothon Wales, L’Etape du Tour, Maratonna dles Dolomites, Morzine Sportive and GF Mont Ventoux. Other members have ridden across America, to the Black Sea, from Spain and the south of France to Dorset, London to Paris, Lands End to John O’Groats and many other cycling adventures. In addition, in recent years there has been an annual trip to Mallorca around Easter time.

Saturday and Sunday group rides happen throughout the year and in the summer months the club runs a Time Trial every Wednesday evening. The club also runs a number of circuit races and road races based around the Henstridge airfield which attract riders from across the region. In the winter a Mountain Bike race series takes place on the Stourhead estate.

Whatever type of cyclist you are, GDW has something to attract you. Come along to one of our events, get involved, and hopefully you’ll join up!
